About Rebelle Geek
Storytelling on the frontlines of fandom and culture
Creating a FeminineFandomenon
I remember the first time I covered a pop culture convention. I was sitting in the room ready to write about a well known comic book company. I was one of two women, although the people from the company were very kind to me, my fellow journalists didn’t make me feel welcome. I had to prove I was a “real fan.” This feeling of not belonging followed me through my career. I noticed in the world of Pop culture journalism, covering fandoms and comic cons women were a minority.
I also noticed whenever I wanted to try to network or get to know other publishers, or toy collector contacts my male counterparts would not introduce me to their contacts. They were, however more than happy to ask me out on a date. I felt objectified, and alone. Not to mention some of the fandoms I love like Barbie, Disney, or Sailor Moon, aka “girl stuff” weren’t seen as legitimate fandoms. This type of boys club in the world of Pop Culture journalism almost made me want to quit. I was good enough to get hit on, but not taken seriously enough to have a seat at the table. I would hear remarks like “women don’t actually like Star Wars.” or “Women don’t read comics.” Tired of feeling like I don’t belong, I decided to start Rebelle Geek.
Women fandoms and women or femme fans are legitimate fans. We can love pink, while also loving comics, manga, and sci-fi. Rebelle geek is a place where myself and other female Journalists have a seat at the table. Our mission is to bring other women and femme creators into the conversation. Rebelle geek is more than a pop culture blog. It is a rebellion pushing back against the notion that female fans are “fake fans,” no matter what your fandom is, whether it’s Barbie comic books, shojo or shonnen. You deserve to be seen and heard.
We are more than a news site, we are a community of fellow pop-culture obsessed women who want to nerd out in a safe space. Welcome to the FeminineFandemenon!
Who am I?
Hi! I am Isabel Dieppa, my friends call me “Belle” you can too! I am a nerdy comic loving, geek podcasting, roller skating journalist.
Throughout my career I have had the opportunity to do a lot of hard hitting journalism covering Puerto Rico proprety rights, sexual harassment at musical festivals, and education.
I’ve always felt that pop culture is more than just “fluff” journalism. It’s an opportunity to talk about what connects us. Fictional stories inspire us and help us to navigate some of our most difficult challenges. It is because of this passion to blend my nose for news with my passion for pop culture that I started rebelle geek.
But who am I, really? I am first and foremost a storyteller. Before I ever started writing I was a stage actor. My love of literature, plays and performance drove me to loving comics, movies and the theatre.
In addition to my love of journalism I love cosplay. Cosplay has always been a wonderful creative avenue that scratches my inner theatre kid itch.
I am always looking for ways to not only tell stories, but to bring communities together to celebrate and have a fun time. It is my honor and mission to elevate stories especially those from marginalized communities. It would be my honor to share yours.
