Rebelle Geek SDCC news!
We are only a couple of weeks away from San Diego Comic Con. Are you ready for it? Because I sure am not. SDCC is the mecca for friendly fans. Every year geeks travel from across the globe to check out the center of popular culture.
2024 looks like it’s already shaping up to be a big year. Over the last four years SDCC has been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, and last year’s writers and actors strikes. But this year it looks like we will go back to the pre-pandemic days, and that is something to celebrate.
But just because forces outside of SDCC’s control happened doesn’t mean we didn’t have fun the last couple of years. After all the show must go on. One of the highlights of every year at SDCC is Funko’s Funkoville. With three stores including, Funko, Mondo, and Loungefly, the Funko village is always an interactive experience.
Last year Funko launched its Pop! Yourself pops (you can check out our coverage here). Funko celebrates various fandoms by making pops of movies, vintage shows, and even yourself. The secret to Funko’s success is the fans according to the Vice President of Pop! Yourself and retail, Dave Beré.
“I think it comes down to the fans,” Beré told Rebelle geek at last year’s SDCC. “It’s about the fandoms and what the fans are connecting to.”
Keeping their finger on the pulse of fandoms has allowed funko to thrive and grow.
Although fandoms have changed and evolved, Funko continues to bring together the right formula. The Funko booth at cons isn’t just a shopping experience, it’s an immersive experience.
This is especially true with the Pop! Yourself Funkos. One year after the original launch of the Pop! Yourself Funko, the brand is expanding Pop! Yourself Funkos with the celebration of Deadpool and Wolverine.
This year fans can Popify themselves as a Deadpool or Wolverine cosplayer.
“Celebrating our one-year anniversary by directly engaging with the deep-rooted fandom of our Funko community allows us to immerse our fans in all things Funko at the epicenter of pop culture with our brand-new cosplay experience inspired by Marvel Studios’ Deadpool & Wolverine,” said Johanna Gepford, SVP, Revenue.
This year’s Funkoville will also be celebrating the diversity of visitors at SDCC with its airport theme. SDCC attendees can purchase a Funko passport for $5. Attendees can receive a stamp from each store at Funkovile (Funko, Mondo, Loungefly, and Funko Fusion).
